Since 1990 after the fall of communism, Plzen has been the meeting and starting point of the many liberation celebrations that are held in many countries throughout Europe.

At the end of the 1200s, simultaneously with the foundation of Plzen, work began on St Bartholomew's Church, the dominant feature of the town.

When visibility is good, its slim tower (measuring 102.26 meters, it is the highest church tower in Bohemia) provides a view of the Šumava area, located 70 kilometers away.

An argillite statue of the Madonna graces the main altar of the church. Created in the so-called beautiful style, this medieval jewel has great importance for Europe.

In 1993, Pope John Paul II established a bishopric in Plzen and St Bartholomew's church was promoted to a cathedral.

The 1st of May each year throughout the city is adorned with American flags.

Military enthusiasts from many places in European come to participate with their collection of WW-II military vehicles.

Vehicles which were the backbone of the American and allied forces during the invasion and the grandfather of the biggest logistical movement of war machines needed to defeat the enemy and bring an end to WW-II in Europe.

During World War II, "Kilroy Was Here ", began as graffiti in homes and wherever the American G.I.s were stationed overseas.

Eventually the saying came to represent America's worldwide presence to where Kilroy was even present in bunkers, and other places by American soldiers in Vietnam.

Today, “Kilroy Was Here!” remains a whimsical symbol of the momentous achievements made by an entire generation of Americans for some humor during their darkest hours during war.
